Mak joined the Climate Finance & Policy (CFP) research group in May 2022 as a researcher (Postdoc as of June). As part of the external pageSWEET Edgecall_made project, he works on investigating the financing landscape and costs of capital for renewable and decentralized energy assets in Switzerland. Besides this, his research focuses on policies to mobilize capital investments for offshore wind and deep decarbonization technologies such as carbon capture and storage, energy storage and hydrogen.
Mak conducted his PhD in Energy Economics at the Technical University of Denmark (external pageDTU Managementcall_made & external pageDTU Windcall_made) under the mentorship of external pageLena Kitzingcall_made and external pageDogan Kelescall_made. He investigated the impact of auctions for renewable energy support on financing conditions and costs of capital for renewables (co-financed by the external pageAURES II projectcall_made). Mak applies mixed methods ranging from interviews to stochastic cash flow analysis. Mak also holds a M. Sc and M. Eng. in circular economy technologies from external pageRitsumeikan Asia Pacific University and Trier University of Applied Sciencescall_made, and a external pageB. Sc in Economics from University of Zagreb.call_made He has also participated in courses on governance and international relations organized by external pageThe Fund for American Studiescall_made and external pageGeorgetown Universitycall_made.
In between his master studies and the PhD, Mak worked four years for various energy related organizations and projects. This includes working in international development for external pageUNDPcall_made on accelerating the development of energy cooperatives and crowdfunding in Croatia. Besides this, he worked for external pageJoanneum Researchcall_made and the external pageUniversity of Grazcall_made as a research assistant in EU energy policies. He also worked as an independent consultant focusing on energy policies in Southeast Europe and as his major achievement he acquired funding from Interreg Central Europe for the external pageENES-CE projectcall_made, focusing on improving local energy governance in the region.
Mak spends his free time hiking, trail-running and skiing in the Alps and is an amateur external pagesourdough bread bakercall_made.
